Erythropoietin (EPO) is a naturally occurring peptide hormone (glycoprotein) produced primarily by the kidneys. It regulates red blood cell production (erythropoiesis) and is widely used clinically to treat severe anemia or abused in endurance sports for blood doping.

How EPO Works

  • Oxygen Delivery: When the body experiences low oxygen (hypoxia), the kidneys release EPO. This peptide stimulates the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells, increasing the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity.

  • Secondary Functions: Beyond erythropoiesis, EPO exhibits neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-protective properties.
